By law, you must report any vehicle accident to the police when there is personal injury or damage over a certain dollar amount. If you are unsure, its best to file a police report as soon as possible. ‘Fail to Report and Remain at the Scene of an Accident’ is both a Federal and Provincial offense in Ontario.
It is important to take the necessary steps and time to ensure all related damages, as a result of an accident, are listed on an estimate. Most vehicle owners will not have the expertise to compare estimates line by line. Most consumers will compare bottom-line prices instead, which can be very misleading. The Collision Man’s collision repair professionals will take the time to ensure that each customer understands their collision repair estimate. We want you to feel comfortable with the repair process before proceeding with any repairs. You should always confirm that any repair estimates you get are accurate, reflect the damages to be repaired and are in written form. When comparing estimates remember to compare ‘apples to apples’ and that the estimates all include the same repairs and parts.

If your repair is managed by your insurance company; it is not up to the auto body shop to decide on which parts to utilize for repairs. By law, you are supposed to report any vehicle accident. As far as rate increases are concerned, some insurance companies offer ‘accident forgiveness’ on your 1st at-fault accident. You should always check your policy coverages to confirm that you have the appropriate coverage. If you are unsure about your coverage, always speak to an insurance professional. If you are unclear if the accident was your fault, please review the Fault Determination Rules utilized by insurance companies to determine fault. If you are found to be 50 percent, or more, at-fault, it is likely that your premium will go up at the renewal of your insurance policy.

Accidents happen, and when they do, we are here to help. Follow these simple steps if you are involved in a collision.
Step 1: Always Stop
If you are involved in a collision and do not stop, you may be subject to criminal prosecution. Stop your vehicle, stay calm and when it’s safe, exit the vehicle.
Step 2: Check for Injuries
Assess the extent of injuries and when in doubt, call 911 to report the location of the collision. Caring for victims is a priority, but sometimes it may be unsafe to remove people from vehicles involved in a collision, so wait for help to arrive. Don’t move anyone who has sustained an injury unless it is necessary to keep them from further harm.
Step 3: Pull over and Record Damage
If it’s safe, move your vehicle to the side of the road, away from traffic. Turn on your vehicle’s hazard lights and use cones/warning triangles for safety. Assess the condition of the vehicles as best you can and take pictures of damage. If there are parties involved that have injuries, call 911. Don’t discuss fault, responsibility, or circumstances of the accident with the other driver(s).
Step 4: Exchange Information and Document the Incident
Be sure to obtain important information from all involved drivers:
- Names, address, contact information
- Driver’s license number
- License plate number
- Insurance Information
- Contact information of registered vehicle owners
If a driver fails to provide any of the requested information, it may be advisable to notify the police of the collision. Contact information of passengers and any witnesses should also be obtained.
Step 5: Contact the Professionals at The Collision Man
If you need a tow truck call (905) 432-7253 for 24-Hour Towing Assistance.
Don’t drive your vehicle if it seems unsafe and never sign any releases with towing companies, repair centres or insurance companies that you have not read or do not fully understand.
