Vehicle Safety Inspections & Certifications
At The Collision Man, we know that driving a safe and roadworthy vehicle is essential, not just for your peace of mind but to meet Ontario’s legal requirements. Whether you’re buying, selling, or transferring ownership of a vehicle, you need an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate (SSC) to prove that the vehicle is safe for the road. Our team of certified technicians is fully qualified to perform comprehensive safety inspections and issue certifications to ensure your vehicle meets all provincial safety standards.
What is a Safety Standards Certificate (SSC)?
In Ontario, a Safety Standards Certificate (SSC) is a document issued after a vehicle has passed a safety inspection. It verifies that the vehicle meets the minimum safety standards set by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO). You’ll need this certificate in several situations:
- Buying or Selling a Used Vehicle: If you’re selling a used vehicle, you’ll need to provide a valid SSC to the buyer. Likewise, if you’re buying a used vehicle, obtaining this certificate ensures that the car is safe and roadworthy.
- Transferring Ownership: When ownership of a vehicle is transferred between private individuals, an SSC is required to complete the transfer at ServiceOntario.
- Registering a Vehicle from Out of Province: If you’re registering a vehicle in Ontario that was purchased or previously registered outside the province, you’ll need an SSC to prove it meets Ontario’s safety standards.
- Rebuilding or Repairing a Vehicle: If your vehicle has been significantly repaired or rebuilt after an accident, it must pass a safety inspection before it can be driven again.
Our Safety Inspection Process
At The Collision Man, our licensed technicians conduct thorough safety inspections based on the guidelines set by the MTO. Our inspections cover all critical components that affect the safety and performance of your vehicle, including:
- Brakes
We check the condition of your vehicle’s braking system, including brake pads, rotors, and calipers, to ensure they function properly and meet the required safety standards. Properly functioning brakes are essential for safe stopping distances and overall vehicle control. - Tires and Wheels
Your tires and wheels are inspected for wear, damage, and proper inflation. We check the tread depth to ensure they provide sufficient traction and stability on the road. - Steering and Suspension
A vehicle’s steering and suspension systems are vital for safe handling and stability. We thoroughly inspect these components to ensure they are in good working order and free of any damage that could compromise your safety. - Lights and Signals
All lights, including headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights, are inspected to ensure they are fully functional. Proper lighting is crucial for visibility, especially at night or in adverse weather conditions. - Windshield and Wipers
We inspect the windshield for cracks or chips that could impair visibility. Additionally, we check the wiper blades and washer fluid system to ensure they are operating correctly. - Exhaust System
The exhaust system is inspected for leaks or damage that could pose safety risks or cause the vehicle to fail an emissions test. Ensuring a properly functioning exhaust system helps reduce harmful emissions and noise. - Frame and Body
We examine the structural integrity of your vehicle’s frame and body, looking for signs of rust, damage, or deterioration that could compromise the vehicle’s safety. - Seatbelts and Restraints
We ensure that all seatbelts and safety restraints are in good condition and functioning properly. Seatbelts are a critical part of vehicle safety, providing protection for passengers in the event of an accident. - Fuel System
The fuel system is checked for leaks, damage, and proper operation to ensure the safe delivery of fuel to your engine. - Other Safety Features
We also inspect additional safety features, such as airbags, horns, and mirrors, to make sure they are fully operational.
What Happens After the Inspection?
Once we complete the safety inspection, we will either:
- Issue a Safety Standards Certificate: If your vehicle meets all of the safety requirements, we’ll issue you an SSC, certifying that the vehicle is roadworthy and complies with Ontario’s safety standards.
- Provide a Repair Plan: If any issues are detected during the inspection, we’ll provide you with a detailed report outlining the necessary repairs. Our team can handle these repairs in-house, ensuring your vehicle meets safety standards as quickly as possible.
